Metropolitan Montessori Schools Celebrates 40 Years of Serving Houston Children and Families
Houston early childhood education leader marks four decades of Montessori-inspired learning, family partnership, and community impact.
HOUSTON, TX — September 16, 2026 — Metropolitan Montessori Schools, Inc. (MMS), a Houston-based provider of early childhood education services, is celebrating 40 years of nurturing, developing, and educating young children and supporting families across the Houston community.
Founded in 1986 to serve the work-life needs of professionals in downtown Houston, Metropolitan Montessori Schools opened one of Houston’s first Montessori-based early childhood education programs on the campus of Christ Church Cathedral. Originally known as Cathedral House Montessori School, the program served children from six weeks through five years of age, providing high-quality Montessori-inspired learning close to where many parents worked.
For four decades, MMS has remained committed to the belief that every child has both the desire and the capacity to learn to his or her fullest potential. Through carefully prepared learning environments, individualized guidance, and developmentally appropriate experiences, MMS helps children build confidence, independence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

Metropolitan Montessori Schools expanded its service to the Houston community through a longstanding partnership with Christ Church Cathedral, operating Cathedral House Episcopal School, and through the opening of the Center for Early Childhood Education at Rice University in 2008. The Rice Children’s Campus serves the children of Rice University faculty, staff, and students from birth through five years of age.
Across its programs, MMS offers rich early learning experiences grounded in the work of Dr. Maria Montessori. The organization’s approach recognizes the importance of the first years of life and supports children’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. MMS also places family partnership at the center of its work, recognizing parents and caregivers as a child’s first and most important teachers.
Throughout its history, MMS has supported more than the children enrolled in its classrooms. The organization has served as a resource for families and early childhood professionals through initiatives including the Center in Houston for Infant Learning and Development, the Greater Houston Chapter of Texas AEYC and the Gulf Coast Chapter of Texas AEYC. Together, these efforts reflect MMS’s broader commitment to strengthening the early childhood community in Houston.
